The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the notion behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it must comply with specific restrictions. In other words, all .MOBI websites must be created to be opened flawlessly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the .MOBI Registry. These incorporate how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The rules have induced some worries because the generic top-level domain name extension is the only one that specifies what devices need to be able to access a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be built in such a way as to be opened by the majority of browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
